Biography

Janet Calderwood was born in 1790 at Holms (now Holmes Farm), which is about 1.5 miles north of the village of Dundonald. Her parents, Robert Calderwood and Janet Wilson, were likely working there as farm labourers. She was baptized at Dundonald on the 29th of August, 1790.^[1] Janet married Robert Melvin in 1811 in Irvine Parish, probably in the Irvine Old Parish Church. In the parish marriage record Robert's surname is spelled Melvie and both were identified as "of this parish."^[2] Their marriage was solemnized by minister Peter Robertson in the Irvine Relief Church.

When their eldest child Jean was born in 1812, Janet and Robert were still living in Irvine, but by 1816 they had moved to Kilkerran, Dailly parish, in south Ayrshire.^[3] The 1841 Census shows Janet (recorded as "Mrs. Melvin") living with Robert and their eight children at 88 Carrick St, Brownfield parish, Glasgow.^[4] All the children except Jean, Hugh and Anne were recorded as born in Lanark county. Robert was working as a dyer, and the children of working age (12 and older) were also employed in the weaving industry.
