25 Aug 2017: From Findagrave.com: George was the oldest son of farmers John & Eliza (Fry) Caldwell. He married Elizabeth Ann Williams in Giles Co, Va on Sep 1, 1851 and they raised their 10 children on a farm between his parents and brother Manelius.
In 1861, he enlisted in the Civil War with brothers Manelius, Andrew & Morton, serving as personal escort to Gen. John Echols in the 151st Regiment, Co. A of the Virginia Militia.
He was a master carpenter and surveyor, surveying both the VA-WV state line and Mercer-Summers WV county line.
He married Emma R. Trail in Mercer Co, WV on May 30, 1895, and they had daughters Cleo and Estella.

25 Aug 2017: From : Caldwells and their Cousins: Enlisted in Confederate Army at Jumping Branch, VA 23 Aug 1861 as a Captain of Comnpany A, 151st VA Militia Regiment. It was disbanded 13 Oct 1861, Enlisted as a Private under Capt William Henderson French on 5 May 1862. 151st -> 33rd Va Cavalry. Detailed a s a couried to Brig Gen Echols 28 Jan 1863. 22 Jun 1865, he was "paroled" from active duty (2 months after the war) . Parole listed him as a master carpenter and surveyor. He had surveyed the VA-WV border as well as the Mercer- Summers County line. Was a Master Mason, & hung his sword in the Masonic Lodge, Princeton, WV (it is now lost)See Manelius C. Caldwell My Notes: William Henderson French did exist, his home is an historic place. There was a 33rd VA Infantry and a 34th VA Cavalry. Can't find a 33rd VA Cavalry.
