She married on 30 Jan 1811 at Fayette County, Kentucky to Alexander Dunlap III. [2]
Mary passed away in 1856 at the age of 63 and was buried at The Lexington Cemetery in Fayette County, Kentucky. [3]
According to author William E. Railey, Mary was said to have come from South Carolina, a relative of John Caldwell Calhoun, [4] but the 1850 census shows her born in Kentucky and the connection between Mary Caldwell and John Caldwell Calhoun has yet to be established.
John Caldwell Calhoun's mother was Martha Caldwell, a member of the large Caldwell family that settled in that part of Lunenburg County, Virginia that is now Charlotte County. Martha's brothers John and William studied surveying under John Caldwell Calhoun's father Patrick Calhoun. The Caldwell brothers worked with Patrick Calhoun in surveying the South Carolina backcountry and they settled there in what became the Ninety Six District. After their mother was widowed, John and William brought her to South Carolina along with two of their three brothers and all five of their sisters.
