Biography

George Caldwell and Susanna Harris married 04 Jan 1791 in Woodford County, Kentucky [1] and had three children: [2]

  1. Mary, m. Col. Alexander Dunlap III
  2. Betsy, m. John Curd
  3. Paulina, m.1. John Higbee, m.2. Joseph Chrisman

No "George Calhoun" or "George C." Caldwell appears in familysearch.org records for Kentucky during period, but there are George Caldwells on record in Mercer, Fayette, Butler, and Jessamine counties.

According to Railey's History of Woodford County, the George Calhoun Caldwell who married Susanna Harris (dau. of Harrison Harris) is "a cousin of John Caldwell Calhoun, the South Carolina statesman;" [2] but the connection has not yet been established. Two of John C. Calhoun's uncles on his mother Martha Caldwell's side had sons named George, but David's son was George Washington Caldwell and his brother James's son was George Forrest Caldwell; so it appears that this George Calhoun Caldwell is not a first cousin.

We know that Caldwell families from the 1742 settlement at Cub Creek in what is now Charlotte County, Virginia migrated both to South Carolina and to Kentucky after the Revolution. [3] To Kentucky went:

And to South Carolina went:

Railey identifies George Calhoun Caldwell "of South Carolina" so more research is warranted down John & William's family lines.
