Biography

John Caldwell was the second son of John Caldwell and Mary Sweetenham. His exact birth date is not known, but he was baptized on 16 Sep 1630, according to baptismal records of Londonderry Cathedral.[1] Note: Another uncited source list John's birthplace as Lifford Parish, County Donegal, Ireland.

John's first wife was Margaret Porter, married 11 Jun 1651, presumably in Ballycogan Parish where they both resided at the time. Margaret died before having any children, and she was buried 16 May 1653.

John married again on 06 Jun 1654 to Mary Holmes, ceremony performed by Mayor John Elwin, and witnessed by Alexander Ewing and Daniel McCullen. Mary was the daughter of James Holmes and Jane Jennings of County Derry. Their children were:[2]

  1. Joseph, m. Jane McGhie
  2. Margaret, bap. 19 Aug 1655
  3. John, bap. 10 Jun 1659
  4. Mary Jane, bap. 08 Oct 1660
  5. William, bap. 20 Apr 1662, m. 02 Oct 1697 Elizabeth Porter, bur. 20 Oct 1725
  6. Andrew, bap. 18 Sep 1664

John is buried in Conleigh Parish, Ballycoogan, Ireland[3]

Verne Hoffman, Jr. gives John's date of death as Jan. 1692 (suspect typo of "Jun." 1692) and marriage date as June 6, 1654 (correct for second wife, Mary Holmes). At least one source gives date of death as November 18, 1692 (suspect this is the date his will was executed and that Stallworth has correct date of death of 20 June 1692).

You are following a Ballycogan line and have confused several CALDWELL families. See my comment below.

Has anyone checked the will of Mary's second husband and realised that John has married a Sarah? This copying and pasting has got out of hand. This line is a completely different one to the Castle Caldwell one and should be treated as such.
