Biography

Early spellings of surname vary.

James Caldwell was born in Fermanagh County, Northern Ireland.

He was baptised at Lisnaskea, Fermanaugh, Ireland in 1821.

He emigrated to Canada.

In Canada, he resided in Bristol Township, Quebec.

James married Emily Jane Smith (she was born near Bruton, in Somersetshire, England) in 1852 at Clarendon Centre East, Quebec. They were married by Rev. F.S. Neve. They bought a farm in Clarendon in 1853.

James and Emily were the first local family to have a post office in their home.

They donated the land for St. Luke's Anglican Church. St. Luke's was built in 1868. Prior to that, services had been held in different homes. The building was consecrated in 1874. In 1969, Caldwell was no longer listed as a congregation and five years later St. Luke's, Caldwell was secularized by the M.K. Roberts, the Archdeacon of Western Quebec. The church building was sold in 1975. Who bought it???

After having nine children together, Emily passed away. She was 41 years old. Emily was predeceased by their son William.

Two years later, in 1875, James Caldwell married Elizabeth Storie, on the 7th (?) inst., by Rev. D.J. McLean. The marriage record states, James Caldwell was living in the Township of Bristol, and Elizabeth Storie was the daughter of James Storie of the Township of McNab.

James fathered two more children: Christopher and John.

James passed away in 1894.

Obituary states James' death occured at the age of sixty-nine. It lists four sons: Christopher (deceased), James, William Henry, Anthony and four daughters: Margaret, Mollie, Kate and Emma with his first wife, Emily J. Smith. With his second wife, Elizabeth Storie, had sons: Christopher, and John.
