Biography

Joseph Caldwell was born 09 Jan 1657 in Londonderry, Northern Ireland (or possibly Lefford, Ballycogan, Donegal, Ireland) the second child and eldest son of John Caldwell and Mary Holmes. Joseph married Jane McGhia (also spelled McGhie) on 08 Apr 1682 in County Donegal. Jane was the daughter of Alexander McGhia and Jane Milliken. Joseph and Jane had seven children:^[1]

3. Margaret, b. 1686, d. in Ireland

5. George, b. 1690, m. Jane Phillips (Margaret's sister), d. in Ireland
6. Catherine, b. 1691, m. John Dudgeon, d. in Virginia
7. Andrew, b. 1692/3, m. Ann Stuart/Stewart

All Joseph's children except Margaret and George, who died in Ireland, emigrated to America. Most came in 1727 with their son, Captain John Caldwell. ^[2] Andrew in 1718. Joseph and Jane's son Capt. John Caldwell established the Caldwell settlement at Cub Creek, VA.

Joseph is buried in Ballyloughan, Donegal, Ulster, Ireland.[3]

Research Notes

Capt. John's son William had a daughter Margaret Caldwell who married her cousin James Richey, Sr., son of Jeanne Caldwell and Alexander Richey. Joseph is buried in Ballyloughan, Donegal, Ulster, Ireland.^[3]

Marcia Lodgson gives marriage date as April 8, 1682; Verne Hoffman, Jr. gives death date as Sept. 3, 1730 (both supported by other sources).

"I believe the Caldwell name originated at a settlement north of Worcester, England around 1300-1400. In the late 1500's to early 1600's, there was a migration north to Ayr, Scotland. There was a second migration in the 1600's from Ayr into Northern Ireland. This migration was more spreading out than moving. I believe they also stayed in close association with one another. The name changed with these movements representing the difference in languages of the times . The Co- variation remained in England proper, the Cau- variations were primarily located i n Scotland and the Ca- variations were in Ireland. The Caldwells seemed to prosper in Scotland and Ireland and spread out quite dramatically in a relatively short period of time. One James Caldwell (an uncle) even bought a castle in 1662 and renamed it Castle Caldwell in Enniskillen, Ireland. In the early 1600's, the first Caldwells began migrating to the New World. The earliest on record that I have found was about 1604 to Boston from Glasgow. In the years, Scotch Caldwells migrated to the northern New England states of Massachusetts and Connecticut and the Irish Caldwells migrated to the Mid-Atlantic states of Pennsylvania, Delaware and Virginia. The Scotch Caldwells began migrating first in the early 1600's and the Irish Caldwells began migrating in the late 1600's. Our direct relatives arrived in Newcastle, Delaware sometime around 1727. The stateside story will be added at a later date as it is much more detailed and is only partially transcribed for this website. This is the GEDcom file that I have put together that starts with John and Margaret (Phillips) Caldwell and goes back to 1304. It is as accurate as one can get researching the web." ^[4]
