Biography

David was the third son of John Caldwell and Margaret Phillips. He became a ruling elder in the Cub Creek Church.

His youngest child James was not of age when David wrote his will, so David stipulated that his wife Mary keep possession of the place, unless she should remarry.[1]

David is buried in Cub Creek Cemetery in Charlotte County, Virginia. [2]

David's will was dated 14/15 October with a codicil dated 19 May 1767 and was probated 6 March 1769. He names his eldest son John, sons David, William, Thomas, Robert, and James; wife Mary; daughters Margaret, Sarah, Mary, and Jeane; executors Paul Carrington, John Caldwell, and Robert Caldwell.[3]

David Caldwell
Biography
David died between 19 Oct 1765 when he wrote his will, and 6 Mar 1769 when the will was proved. Like his brother, Thomas (see above), David served in the French and Indian War. His widowed wife, Mary, moved to Kentucky.

The information I have is from Caldwell files in the Kentucky State Historical Society library, stating:

  • David Caldwell, son of John and Margaret Phillips Caldwell, was born in Ireland and his children were: John, who married Dicey Mann, Charles, James and David (Varner), who was my ancestor.
  • The LDS "FamilySearch" files show: David Caldwell, son of John and Margaret Phillips Caldwell, was born 7 Jul 1709, Donegal, Ireland; married Mary Dudgeon about 1745 (she died after 1820 in Mercer County, KY); died 1769 and buried at Cub Creek, Charlotte, Va.
  • Kentucky Genealogy and Biography, Vol V says: David's widow and children went to Kentucky and settled at "Caldwell's Station" near Danville on Filson's 1784 map of Kentucky. Also, David's brother, Robert, settled in Kentucky in 1781 and died in 1806 near Danville. They were the only family of John and Margaret Caldwell to go to Kentucky.
  • I have David and Mary Caldwell's son, David Varner Caldwell, born 11Mar 1753 in Va. He married Phoebe Mann in Logan County, Ky., and their children were: Josiah, Thomas (b.12 Dec 1776), Francis, Sally, David, James, Dicy (McAfee), William, Phoebe (Adams), John (my ancestor, b.2 Nov 1790, Boyle Co.,Ky), Cary A., Betsey (Caldwell), Jackson, and Samuel.
  • Pheobe Mann Caldwell was a sister or cousin of Dicey Mann, wife of John Caldwell who was the oldest son of David and Mary Dudgeon Caldwell.[4]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with David by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with David:
