Biography

Anna Calhoun was born on March 11, 1811, in Ohio, the daughter of (possibly) William or James. She married Elijah Casteel on January 7, 1827 at Randolph, Indiana.[1] They had four children in 10 years.

At the 1850 census, Anna and Elijah were living in Dwelling #539 at District 96, Sullivan, Missouri with their daughter Nancy, 20; son Milton, 18 and son James, 12. Also living with them are James L. Kilbury, age 5 and Marthe, 3. James and Marthe were born in Missouri. "Mila" Casteel, 22 years, born Indiana, Cannot Read or Write - crossed out in the 1850 census. This is believed to be Anna and Elijah's son William, listed in his own household with a 16 year old wife, in the 1850 census. [2]

Apparently, right next door at Dwelling # 540, is Meredith Blalock and family. Living with them is Jane Kilbury, age 71.[3] Meredith Blalock married Mary Calhoon, believed to be Anna's sister.

At the 1860 census, we find Anna and Elijah still at Dwelling #540, living with James Kilbury, age 16, Martha Kilbury, age 14 and Jane Kilbury, age 81.[4]

On January 28, 1819, at Madison County, Ohio, Jane Calhoun married Richard Kilberry.[5] Jane (Unknown) Calhoun may be the mother of Anna Calhoun and Mary Calhoon.

At the 1870 census, Anna was living at Big Valley, Siskiyou, California, with her son James, 32. Also living with the family is James Kilberry, age 25, "farm laborer."[6]

At the 1880 census Anna is at Burton Prairie, Coos County, Oregon. She was widowed and living with her daughter Nancy Jane and son-in-law Peter Benham.[7]
