In 1880, Howard Calkins (age 7) was living with his parents Henry R. and Permilla alkins in Richland Township, DeKalb, Indiana. This household also included his siblings: Myrtia (age 3), Edward (age 2) and twins Frank and Fred (both age 9/12).[2]
On 29 June 1898Howard F. Calkins married Lena Schultz in Goshen, Elkhart, Indiana.[3]
In the 1900 census Howard F Calkins (age 26) and his wife, Lena (age 23), were living in Warsaw, Wayne Township, Kosciusko, Indiana. His occupation was listed as brakeman. No one else was living with them.[4]
In the 1910 census Howard F Calkens (age 36) was the married head of household in Elkhart Ward 3, Elkhart, Indiana.[5]
Howard and Lena Calkins were listed in an Elkhart city directory in 1910. His occupation was listed as clerk for the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway (later the New York Central Railroad). Their address was 1514 W. Franklin.

Howard F Calkins died on 17 January 1911 in Elgin, Kane, Illinois,[7] due to injuries he sustained in a fall from a moving train. An Elkhart newspaper reported that he had lived in Elkhart nearly all of his life. He had gone to Elgin about three months before and gotten work as a brakeman on the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad.[8][1]
He was survived by his wife, Lena, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry R. Calkins, two brothers and two sisters. Another of his brothers, Charles, had previously died some years before.

There was a funeral notice in the Elkhart newspaper. It was held at the First Christian church and was "largely attended" including members of the Elks, the Knights of Pythias and the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen. The notice appeared on 20 January 1911. [9]
He was buried on 20 January 1911 in Grace Lawn Cemetery, Elkhart, Elkhart, Indiana.[10]
A Card of Thanks appeared in the Elkhart newspaper on 23 January 1911. It was signed by Mrs. Howard F. Calkins, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Calkins.[11]
