Sarah (Calkins) Craig

The following is from the Adams County Times, dated 18 August 1933: "Mrs. Sarah Craig, 90, Laid to Rest Wednesday - Passed Monday Evening at 6:00 p.m. at the home of her son, E.S. Craig of this city. Death was due to the infirmities that come with old age, Mrs. Craig having been in failing health for the past ten years. Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday, August 16, at 10:00 a.m., conducted by the Reverend H.F. Banks, Pastor of the Congregational Church. Internment was in the Friendship cemetery. Sarah Agnes, daughter of Elisha and Hettie Beals Calkins, was born July 16, 1843 at the farm home of her parents in Dodge County. While she was a young girl the family moved to Jackson County, where she grew to womanhood, and was married June 1, 1862, to Matthew Clinton Craig. Shortly after their marriage Mr. Craig enlisted in the Army of the Union. After he returned from the war they moved to Chippewa County, where he engaged in the business of lumbering, and also studied law, was admitted to the bar and practiced that profession for thirty years. The family lived part of this time in Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Craig moved to Adams in 1913 and Mr. Craig passed away here May 25, 1927. They were the parents of three children. The only daughter, Mrs. Mary Alice Cooper, died ten years ago at Sand Point, Idaho, and grief for her daughter seemed to be the initial cause of Mrs. Craig's failing health. The younger son, Willard M. Craig, died at the age of eight. E.S. Craig of this city survives. Mrs. Craig is also survived by an aged sister, Mrs. Ione Huff, of South Bend, Indiana, and six grandchildren, Guy R. Cooper, Spokane, Washington, Leonard W. Cooper, Eugene, Oregon; Mrs. Bessie Matske, Forsyth Montana; Mrs. Arleva Green, Stanley, Wisconsin; Mrs. Lola Agnes Garrett, Chicago, and Gordon C. Craig of Adams. There are also several great grandchildren. Mrs. Craig in her active years was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. She was a fine Christian wife and mother. She was skilled in many sorts of handicraft, which brought her much pleasure. She enjoyed reading and was well informed on the questions of the day, and also read much in her husband's law books and was almost as well informed on legal questions as was he. Her last years have been shadowed by failing health." Reference: Adams County Times, dated 18 August 1933.[12]
