Biography

Emily Calkins was born on 26 September 1842 ^[1] in Norwalk, Huron, Ohio.^[2] She was the daughter of Osman Calkins and Mehettable Unknown (Hettie Dixon).^[2]

In the 1850 census Emily Calkins (indexed as Corkins, age 7) was in Orland, Steuben, Indiana.^[3]

In the 1860 census Emily T Carkins (age 17) was in Milgrove Township, Steuben, Indiana.^[4]

In the 1880 census Emily Alexander (age 36), keeping house, was the wife of Jas. H. Alexander in Kendallville, Wayne Township, Noble, Indiana.^[5]

In the 1900 census Emily T Alexander (age 58) was the wife of James H Alexander in Wolcottville, Orange Township, Noble, Indiana. Her birth date was given as September 1842.^[1]

In the 1910 census Emily T Alexander (age 63) was the wife of J H Alexander in Orange, Noble, Indiana.^[6]

On 8 April 1917, Emily's husband, James H Alexander, son of Franklin Alexander and Mary Alexander, died (age 81) in Rome City, Noble, Indiana.^[7]

Seven months later, on 10 November 1917, Emily T Alexander, daughter of Osmon Calkins and Hettie Dixon, died (age 73) in Rome City, Noble, Indiana. The informant on this record was her sister, Adelaide Shaw.^[2] She was buried in Orange Cemetery, Rome City, Noble, Indiana.^[8]

Research Notes

• Emily's birth was given as 26 September 1844 on her death record, and September 1842 on the 1900 Census. A birth year of 1844 makes her birth too close to one of her siblings. In addition, in the 1850 census, enumerated in August, shows Emily as age 7, which her birthday coming in September. This supports a birth in 1842. More research is needed.

• The 1900 census indicates that Emily and James had been married for 37 years, making their marriage around 1863. No marriage record has been found. More research is needed.
