Biography

Mary Cameron was born about 1759, probably in Scotland to Thomas Cameron Sr. and his wife. She was the mother of Susan A. McClary, Mary McClary, and Robert Hawthorn Jr. She passed away in Enfield, White County, Illinois on 5 Sep 1851, age 92.

Mary Cameron married Robert McClary in January or February 1778, probably in South Carolina. Their children were: Susan A. McClary born about 1778 in South Carolina and Mary McClary born about 1780 in South Carolina. In 1781, the family was living in York District, South Carolina. Robert McClary "died at Camden," which presumably means that he died following the 25 Apr 1781 defeat of the American forces at Hobkirk's Hill, near Camden. [1]

Mary McClary married second Robert Hawthorn on 3 Jun 1783. He was born 5 Mar 1754 in County Monaghan, Ireland and died 7 Jul 1834 in White County, Illinois.[2] Their child, Robert Hawthorn, was born about 1784 in South Carolina or Georgia and died 1850 in Enfield, White IL.[3]

By 1834, Mary Hawthorn was living in White, IL.

Mary Hawthorn's Declaration on 9 Oct 1839 to the circuit Court of White County, Illinois to receive a pension, on account of her husbands' military service, included this information: Mary Hawthorn was a resident of White County, 79 years old, She married Robert McClary in January or February 1778. "In the spring of 1781 (living then in the York District of South Carolina) he enlisted under Captain Mills, General Henry Hampton's Regiment for a ten month tour and died at Camden before the expiration of the term of his enlistment." She afterward married Robert Hawthorn who died 7 July 1834.[1]

Mary Hawthorn received a Revolutionary War widow's pension of $39.50 per half year from September 1831 through September 1843.[4]
