Abel Campbell was born on Oct. 26, 1807 to William Campbell and Ruth Crawford in Washington County, Pennsylvania. When he was young, the family moved to Stark County, Ohio.
He married Jane A. Taylor, daughter of John Taylor and Margaret Shaffer, on Jun. 16, 1831 in Stark County, Ohio. They became the parents of Margaret, John, Edward, Ruth, wife of Emanual Leas, William, James, Benjamin and Lewis. William died in 1871 at the age of 23 years and Benjamin died at the age of 3 years on Sep. 4, 1855.
In 1836, they moved to Summit County, Ohio where they lived 11 years.
Abel, his wife, Jane, and four of their children, traveled by teams to De Kalb County, Indiana, arriving on May 12, 1847. The journey took them two weeks. He owned land in the southwest corner of Section 28 in Smithfield Township in De Kalb County. He purchased the property from Andrew Houhn the previous fall. It had been entered in 1836 by his father-in-law, John Taylor, who sold it to Mr. Houhn. Sixteen acres were cleared and there was a small, round, log house on the land which the family moved into. Abel cleared about 75 acres and erected several more buildings, making it his home until his death.[1]
Abel Campbell died 1 day after the election of Abraham Lincoln, on Nov. 9, 1860 in Smithfield Township, De Kalb County, Indiana. He is buried at the Cedar Lake Cemetery in Waterloo, Indiana.[2]
