Samuel James Campbell was born on 2 September 1797 in Butler, Pennsylvania to John and Ann Campbell. Butler had recently been opened to homesteaders and they moved with their family to the area that would eventually become Concord, Parker and Fairview Townships. (Although Samuel is referred to as Samuel James in numerous family trees, I have not found any corroborating evidence of his middle name.)
Samuel grew up in the Parker area of Butler County. He married Sidney Gibson in 1823 and they had nine children before she died in 1844. He then married a widow, Jane Hutchison Wilson, in 1846 and they had three more children.
Samuel died in 1865 at the age of 67, still living in Parker Township. He is buried in Bear Creek Cemetery.
