The Campbell family was well established in Franklin County, Pennsylvania during the Revolutionary period, at which time Franklin County was still part of Cumberland County. In 1777, the County's first battalion militia was formed, including three companies whose men were from that part of the county that later became Franklin County. One private in the battalion was named Samuel Campbell.[1] He may or may not be the father of this Samuel Campbell. In 1786, no less than six Campbells - Andrew, David, J., John, John M., and William - appeared on the list of taxables for Franklin County's Fannett Township.[2]
During the War of 1812, Samuel Campbell, the subject of this profile, was a Corporal in Harper's Company from Path Valley, Franklin County.[3] Path Valley included the greater part of Fannett Township. In 1838, 1839, and 1840, Samuel was a Director of the Poor-House of Franklin County.[4]
Nothing else is known about Samuel except that he married Sarah Linn, daughter of Hugh and Sarah (Widney) Linn, in 1810. He may be a brother or other relative of Robert Campbell, who married Sarah's younger sister Jane in 1817.[5]
