DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Horace by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Horace:

Horace Campbell, along with Simeon Brown, purchased land in Middlebury, Addison County, Vermont from Adonijah Ball in 1809. The purchase was to help Ball secure debts over three notes due to Jeremiah Atwood (founder of Middlebury College), and the land, consisting of four acres, was on the north side of the road leading from Middlebury to Weybridge -- but apparently still within the bounds of the town of Middlebury. Horace Campbell and Simeon Brown sold their land to another Atwood in 1811.

Why was Horace Campbell in Middlebury at such an early date? Reviewing other Campbells in Addison, I initially found Franklin Campbell (b. 1815 in Middlebury, Vermont; d. 1889 in Kirwin, Phillips County, Kansas; WikiTree #: 65523) whose father was Abel M. Campbell (b. 1779 in Mansfield, Connecticut), son of Charles Zuriel Campbell and grandson of Andrew Campbell and Ruth. Family ties are a useful variable not only in understanding why an individual changed places of residence but also in confirming familial lineage; we have yet found a document directly linking Horace to Peter Campbell in the same place at the same time, but here we have some additional, circumstantial evidence tying Horace to the Mansfield Campbells. Middlebury records need additional combing for data, and the first decade of the 1800s is likely where we will need to search for records of Peter and Horace together -- if any exist.

Thanks, Robert! That's more than I knew. In my notes, I have that "Abel and his family lived in Middlebury for some time starting around 1805." Zuriel's daughter Sybel, wife of Gideon Abbey, also lived in Middlebury. The FindAGrave page for Gideon says he left from Mansfield to Middlebury about 1797. There's details on the land purchase in this history of Middlebury. Also, for what it's worth, the Hurd book, which was published in 1902, seemingly based on an account of Horace's granddaughter Mabel Campbell (Goodwin) Woodworth, says that Peter left Mansfield for Middlebury with 12-year-old Horace in 1800, after the death of his wife. It also says that Horace's wife's father settled in Rochester in 1786. He married Nancy Wood in Granville, Addison County in 1788, and his mother Nancy (Lord) Wood is supposed to have died there around 1770. Thanks for your skilled research--I will try to pick up the thread before too long.

Also, I'm having trouble finding confirmation, but I thought I remembered Peter's father-in-law, Elijah Babcock, owning land in Vermont and having family members who settled there. New York for sure, but I thought Vermont too.
