His father was Archibald d 1870 an accountant and his mother Isabella Beattie 1801 - 1866.
In 1867 at the time of his marriage he was a Government Surveyor living in Dubbo. They were married in St Matthias Church Paddington.
In 1874 he surveyed the town of Barnes Crossing in S.E. NSW on the banks of the Snowy River and renamed it Dalgety after his wife's family name. In 1903 Dalgety was selected as the site for the national capital but NSW opposed the choice arguing it was too close to Melbourne and too far from the Sydney-Melbourne railway line.
In February 1880 he appeared in the Insolvency Court in Sydney and was living in Redfern. His reason for insolvency was a falling off of employment over the previous two years.
