He was living at Smithville when the War of 1812 broke out.

He served as a private with Capt. Wm. Applegarth's flank company, 2nd York Militia. He was at the battles of Queenston Heights, Stoney Creek and Lundy's Lane.

He picked up an iron pot, 18" in diameter, at Stoney Creek, which became a prized family possession, and was still doing duty in the house in 1899.

He and his wife watched the Battle of Lundy's Lane (25 July 1814) in which his father was engaged.

in 1819 moved with his six brothers (Peter, Robert, Alexander, Henry, Francis, John) by ox-team. From Cooksville on, they had to cut their way through the bush. They had drawn over 1000 acres of land, and the community of Campbell's Cross grew.

There was a pine thicket opposite their home, and he and his son, Abram, watched for Mackenzie's followers. they saw about a dozen go by in couples, who got as far as Streetsville when they heard of the rebellion's collapse, and dispersed quietly. The loyalists went by in broad daylight, about 60 went out.

In 1840 he was Major of the 7th Regiment, North York Militia.

Pathmaster [postmaster?], served as Warden for three terms.

His wife, Margaret Snyder, died 7 Aug 1853, Campbell's Cross, Caledon, Peel

In 1853, having five children and being unable to support a family on his mediocre teaching salary, he petitioned the Governor-General, the Earl of Elgin for a "gratuitous grant of 200 acres" in the townships of Canada West, as it is out of his power to purchase,..."which will rebound to Your Excellency's praise and honour" and not make the Government any poorer.
