Biography

Thomas Joseph Campbell was born in New York City on 26 August 1890. His parents were Patrick Campbell and Ellen Healy.

Thomas first appears in the 1900 U.S. Census.[1] He is listed as 9 years old and living at 449 West 35th Street, Manhattan, with his widowed mother, two older brothers (James, age 25; William, age 23) and a sister (Mary, age 8). Another sister, Martha Cahill, is living next door with her husband and family.

Ten years later, 20-year-old Thomas and his family are found to be living at 429 West 56th Street.[2] The household consists of his mother, two brothers (James, age 36; William, age 33), a sister (Mary, age 17), and the Cahill children: Loretta, age 13; Helen, age 11; Hilda, age 2. Thomas, William, and Mary have jobs with a department store. James works as an undertaker.

The 1920 U.S. Census[3] shows Thomas, age 28, at the same address and job. His older brother, Julian (age 41) and two nieces named Helen (Rogers and Campbell, ages 20 and 12 respectively) were now living in the household along with his 60-year-old mother, Ellen, and a boarder named John Bowden.

On 21 August 1937, Thomas Campbell married Helen Hackett,[4] who had been boarding in his mother's house since at least 1930.[5] They moved to Queens, where they are enumerated in the 1940 U.S. Census along with two of Helen's sisters (Mary Hackett and Margaret Parell) and Helen's niece, Joan Parell.[6] There were no children.

Thomas Campbell died at his home in Skyline Lakes, Ringwood, New Jersey on 23 March 1972.[7][8]
