Theophilus was a farmer in Marion County, South Carolina and Shelby County, Texas.

Theophilus Campbell has Scottish Ancestors.

Theophilus was born in 1796. He was the son of John Campbell and Nancy Cribb.

According to an unsourced note on FamilySearch, Theophilus married Celia Perritt in 1825 in Mullins, Marion, South Carolina. He was about twenty-eight and Celia was about seventeen.[1]

In the 1830 Census, Theophilus is found in Marion County, South Carolina. In the household is a woman between the ages of 20-29 and a girl under five. This is consistent with Celia, his wife, age 22, and their first child, a daughter named Miranda, born in 1828.[2]

In 1840, Theophilus was still living in Marion County, South Carolina. Age and gender are consistent with he and Celia, three sons (John b. ~1831, David b. ~1832 and George b. ~1836) and two daughters (Miranda b. ~1828 and Sarah Ann b. ~1840). Four people in the household were employed in agriculture, and either Theophilus or his wife reportedly couldn't read or write (likely Celia). [3]

In the 1850 census Theophilus (age about 53) was living in Marion, South Carolina. He was reportedly 53 years old, and his wife was 42. Six children were living with them, five sons and one daughter. (Miranda may have married about 1844, according to FamilySearch.) Theophilus was working as a farmer, and had real estate valued at $1000. Their four oldest sons were attending school, though the oldest two were also engaged in farming as well.

According to the 1850 agriculture schedule, Theophilus had two horses, one milk cow, eight working oxen, eighteen other cattle, forty sheep with a total livestock value of $390. He had produced 300 bushels of Indian Corn, two bales of ginned cotton, twenty lbs of wool, ten bushels of peas and beans, and fifty bushels of sweet potatoes that year, as well as twenty lbs of butter. It would appear that his primary crops were corn, sweet potatoes and as well as wool from sheep.

In 1859, Theophilus was taxed in Shelby County on 325 acres of land (located on the Jesse Amason tract of land in Shelby county, west of Shelbyville and north of Huana Creek.[4] It is viewable by map online at the Portal to Texas History.[5] He was also taxed for one enslaved person with a value of $300. This person passed first to his wife after his death in 1860, and then, via tax rolls linked on her page, to her son, David J. Wilson Campbell.

Theophilus passed away in January of 1860, at about 63 years old, of typhoid fever.[6] He left behind his wife and at least one small child still at home (Enos).

Research Notes

  • Edited parents' names to reflect the profiles they linked to. Stephens-7069 19:18, 4 April 2023 (UTC)
  • Needs source for birth and death dates - the Find a Grave page that is linked points to a cemetery which says the markers are all gone. His dates are apparently recorded in a cousin's diary (see sources for both the limited transcription of Rev. Simeon Campbell's diary and the footnote from Marty Grant's extensive work on the Campbell family) but it would be helpful to have a primary source citation.
  • County tax records support a death in 1860. Theophilus is listed in the 1859 Shelby County tax rolls,[7] and disappears from them the next year,[8] with his wife now taxed for the same acreage on the same lease with the same number of slaves.
  • Possible death record? There is an indexed record for the 1860 Mortality Schedule in Shelby County for a "Theopalus Covington" who died in January, a 64 year old farmer born in South Carolina who died "suddenly". The surname is off (but could be misindexed), but there are no indexed records that are even remotely close for the rest of 1860, and the other details are very close.[9] Does anyone know how to find an image of this schedule, or whether it's available? Stephens-7069 15:22, 27 April 2023 (UTC) NOTE There are Covington families in Shelby County at the time so that could support either a mistake in local surnames or support a different man also named Theophilus (or similar) with matching age, birth location. Stephens-7069 17:45, 27 April 2023 (UTC)
  • Does anyone know of a marriage record for Theophilus and Celia? There is an unsourced date of 1825 in Mullins, Marion, South Carolina on FamilySearch. In History of Shelby County, Mary Campbell Keeter gives the date of 1830.
  • The Find a Grave page also contains the following note: War of 1812. 16th Regt. (Burrus) Mississippi Militia.[10] However, this is for Mississippi and he was both born in South Carolina (via the 1850 Census) and appears to have lived in South Carolina in the 1830 and 1840 Census. In addition, he would have been about 15 years old in 1812. If you have records for this or more information about his service, please add it here!
  • If someone has access to the passages of Rev. Simeon Campbell's diary mentioned here (either in transcript or preferably images), please add a better (first hand!) citation if you can.
