John is the child of Peter Campbell and Catherine Finnie.
The 1851 Scotland census shows John Campbell, age 2, living on Lady Burn Watson Land with his parents, Peter and Catherine Campbell; and four siblings: Robert, Peter, Elizabeth, and James. Two of his mother's siblings, James and Elizabeth Finnie, are also in the household.
