Biography

Mary was born between 1900^[1] and 1906 in North Carolina.^[2][3] It is probably earlier in that range based on her marriage in 1915.

Mary Rushing and W. V. Smith, son of Kell Smith and Mattie Smith, were married on 11 Aug 1915 in Goose Creek township, Union County, North Carolina. When W. V. applied for the license, he stated that Mary was 18 years old, and identified her parents as R. W. Rushing and Bettie Rushing, and signed with his mark.^[4]

Research Notes

Reason and Bettie Rushing are known to have adopted another daughter, so it is possible that they did with Mary also.

Her biological father may have been a Mr. Freeman (her Death Certificate) or G A Weaver (her obituary).

Her biological mother may have been Virginia Chloe Ann “Virgie” (Freeman) Weaver (1881-1955) (the bio on Virginia's FindAGrave memorial page) or Virgie (Unknown or Campbell) Weaver (family lore from Denise Austin Creech).
