J.F. Cannon's Funeral Is Set For Tomorrow
Concord, June 21.
Joseph F Cannon, wealthy 62-year-old Concord business man, was found dead early today in his room of a hotel at Hot Springs, Ark., where he went five weeks ago for his health. Death was attributed to apoplexy. The body of the banker, manfacturer and capitalist was on its way back to Concord tonight for burial here. Because of a heart ailment from which he had suffered for several years, Cannon had given up many of the business activities which made him one of the state's wealthiest men. But, until his death, he continued as president of the Citizens Bank and Trust Company here, vice president of the Davidson mills at Davidson and a director of the Wiscassett mills at Albermarle. Son of Pioneer Textile Magnate
He was formerly associated in business with his father, the late James W. Cannon, pioneer textile magnate of this vicinity, and was directing head of the Wiscassett mills. In addition he was a stockholder in numerous domestic and other business enterprises. For a dozen years he served as president of the Cabarrus county fair. One of his chief interests in the last few years was his little granddaughter, Anne Cannon Reynolds, now eight years old. The child, born to his daughter, Anne, and her first husband, the late Smith Reynolds, has spent much of her time with her grandparents since her birth.
Defendant In $200,000 Suit In 1935, Cannon was made defendant in a $200,000 alienation suit brought by Frank Brandon Smith, second husband of his daughter, Anne. The first trial resulted in a verdict of $125,000 for Smith, but Superior Court Judge W.F. Harding promptly set it aside as excessive.
The suit was later settled by a compromise involving a comparatively nominal sum.
Cannon is survived by his widow, the former Annie Ludlow, of Winston Salem, a son, Joseph Franklin, Jr., operator of a flying service at Charlotte, and two daughters, Anne, who is now Mrs. L.C. Plumley, of Germantown, Pa., and Mrs. Edwin A. Morris, of Abingdon, Ill. In addition, he is survived by Charles A., of Concord, head of the Cannon Mills at Kannapolis, the following brothers and sisters and also a banker; F.T. of Asheville, M.L. of Charlotte, Mrs. David H. Blair, of Washington, Mrs. Clark Howell, Sr., of Atlanta, Mrs. Hilary Lucke, of Winston Salem, and Mrs. Edward Mattes, of New York City. The funeral will be held from the home here Friday morning at 11 0'clock and burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
