Biography

Elijah Cantrell was born 1758 in Orange County North Carolina, USA.

He was the Son of Isaac Cantrell Nancy Cloud

Elijah grew up on Wolf Island Creek and on 25 Nov 1794 he bought, from his brother, Charles, 100 acres of land which lay along this creek.

He married Achsa "Axy" Cummins about 1795. In March of 1796 he bought another 151 acres. On 1 June 1798 he bought yet another 212 acres.

He died within the next two years in Kentucky but date unknown still.

Elijah Cantrell was a North Carolina colonist.

Elijah was born about 1758 in Orange County, North Carolina. He was the son of Isaac Cantrell and Nancy Cloud. He passed away before 1800 in Rockingham County, North Carolina and is presumably buried in Wolf Island Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Rockingham County, North Carolina. His widow Axy Cantrell and her two children were listed on the 1800 census in that county.[1]

Elijah married Achea Axy Cummins about 1795 in Rockingham County, North Carolina.[citation needed]

His two children are referenced in the will of his father, although not by name, submitted for probate in February 1806.

… except my son Elijah Cantrell's heirs; to the two children he left at his decease, I will that they have of my estate ten shillings between them.[2]

Note: Elijah did not marry Margaret "Peggy" Connelly. He has been confused with a different Elijah Cantrell.

Death & Legacy

The exact date of Elijah's death is not known. He purchased land in Rockingham County, North Carolina in 1794, 1796 and for the last time on 1 June 1798. His widow is listed on the 1800 census in Rockingham County as head of household. He apparently died between those two dates.

In his estate files we have a record that at the time of his death Elijah owned 365 1/4 acres of land. On 14 August 1801 the Sheriff was ordered by the court to summon a jury "to lay off for Acsa Raferty late widow of Elijah Cantrell…" her dowry. The jury then "marked and laid off for said widow one hundred and twenty one acres including the late dwelling house…" on 6 November 1801.[3]
