Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Jacob Cantrell was a Virginia colonist.

Jacob was born about 1752 Orange County, Virginia. He was the son of Isaac Cantrell and Nancy Cloud. He passed away before February 1813 in Rockingham County, North Carolina.

(Jacob's father, Isaac Cantrell, is believed to have moved from Delaware with his parents to Orange County, Virginia about 1738. Isaac is located in Orange County, North Carolina by 1756. If Jacob was born in 1752 he was born in Virginia; if he was born in 1760 as other trees have it he was born in North Carolina.)

Jacob married 2 June 1782 in Guilford County, North Carolina to Hannah Denton. They were the parents of eleven children; Robert, Frank, Jacob, George, Elijah, John, Michael, Rhonda, Sarah, Mary and Lucy.[1]

Census records show Jacob's continuing residence in Rockingham County from 1790 to 1810.

Jacob was named in the lawsuit filed by his half-brother, Peter Cantrell, regarding their father's will on 3 February 1806. (See information regarding the lawsuit on the profile page of Isaac Cantrell.)

  • 11 July 1788 – Acquired 200 acres in Rockingham County, North Carolina; grant number 15, on the waters of Wolf Island Creek[3]

Death & Legacy

At the February 1813 session of the Rockingham County Court the Sheriff was ordered to summon "jurors to allot and set apart the Dower of Hannah Cantrell Widow and Relict of Jacob Cantrell deceased."[4]

Cantrell-1369 and Cantrell-20 appear to represent the same person because: similar birth date & place; both married to Hannah; both son of Isaac Cantrell
Cantrell-20 and Cantrell-1369 do not represent the same person because: These two are fifty years and several states apart.
