Research Notes

I think there is some conflation for Sarah "Elizabeth" Cantrell as daughter of John M. Cantrell Jr. (1757-1823). His LWT supports a daughter named Sarah Cantrell McKinney. Separately, there is a 'Betsey' mentioned in the LWT. Raffety-49 17:40, 5 June 2023 (UTC)

From the Estate of John M. Cantrell:

  • "I give and bequeath unto my loving wife, Elizabeth Cantrell, the remainder of my estate, both real and personal, during the time of her natural life, or widowhood, to be equally divided amongst my children, at her death, that is to say: Abraham, Isaac, and my daughter Tilitha's heirs, and Betsey, William, Polly, Martin, Berry, Anna, Sally and her heirs, and Synthia; also twenty-five dollers to be given to my granddaughter, Janny Robbins. "Lastly, I appoint my three sons, William Cantrell, Martin Cantrell, and Berry Cantrell, executors of this my last Will and Testament. "In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 30th day of March, 1823. (Signed)
  • John died after 21 July 1823 when he signed a deed to Berryman and before 16 December 1823 when it's recorded in court that he was dec'd and his executors were acknowledged. An announcement of his 'proven LWT' occurred at Buck Creek Meeting House in December 1823. The LWT appears to be proven on 16 December 1823, "... John Cantrell late of said district died leaving a will with William Cantrell, Martin Cantrell and Berryman Cantrell named executors who hath applied to me for the probate of said will..." Pg. 796-21
  • On 4 February 1824, William Cantrell, Martin Cantrell & Berry Cantrell vs Elizabeth Cantrell & others to prove John Cantril. legatees acknowledged; Berry Cantrell, Elizabeth Cantrell, Sinthy Cantrell, Sary McKiny by Henry McKiney, Joseph Robbins, Martin Cantrell, Ann Turner by Middleton Turner. The settlement shows 3 tracts of land sold.
  • On 24 February 1824 appraisers were appointed by the Court in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, for the estate of John Cantrell. They were to return their report by 24 April 1824. Appraisers: Charley Cantrell, Samuel Jenkins, Wm Cantrell, James Foster, Daniel Cantrell.
  • In 1824, William Cantrell was living in Spartanburg District, South Carolina and Abraham Cantrell was living in Warren County, Tennessee per a land record stating they were acting as administrators in the estate of John Cantrell deceased.
  • Of interest, some of following names appear in the Sales Bill of the Estate of John Cantrill deceased; Berry Cantrell, Charles Cantrill, Richard Moore, Elizabeth Cantrell, John Morris Sr, John Cantrell ___, John H. Cantrell, Jacob Cantrill, Henry McKinney, Martin Cantrell, Edward Turner, Middleton Turner, William Turner, Shadrick Weaver, Wm Cantrell, Abraham Cantrell, Reuben Cantrell, Jordan Morris, Wm Morris, Thomas Liles, George Cantrell, Aaron Cantrell, Jos B. Morris, Nimrod Cantrell, Alfred Brown, and Dan'l Cantrell to name a few. One John Cantrell has some writing beside his name that I cannot make out.
