Descendant of William Cantrell, the first Cantrell in North America. William arrived from England with Captain John Smith in Jamestown, Virginia on April 20, 1607
WILLIAM CANTWELL b. about 1790 in South Carolina, exact date of his death is unknown but in Grayson Co., Tx., the will of William Cantwell was filed 25 Aug. 1868 and names Cyntha Cantwell as widow (the name is spelled as Caulwell on the envelope and is in Will Box C). We also don't know if her name was Cyntha or Cynthia. The date and place of William's marriage to Cyntha is not known. Cyntha's maiden name also remains a mystery. She was born about 1798 in South Carolina and died after August 1868. A noted Cantwell researcher, Warren Cantrell, says William went to eastern Tennessee and then after marriage, on to the Territory of Mississippi, into the portion that became Alabama.
In the mid-1820's, William and his brother James #3 moved their families to Arkansas and settled north of the Arkansas River.
Their names appear on the tax rolls of Crawford County, 1829, and in Pope County, Arkansas, 1830. The 1830 Pope Co. Ark. Census lists William and his wife as aged 30 to 40, 5 males under ten years, one female 10 to 15, and one female under five years of age. "Goodspeed" write that William Cantwell was one of the three judges elected in Bowen Township, Madison Co, Ark. in 1836. From 1837 through 1853, William Cantwell is listed on the tax rolls of Madison County.; in 1840 he purchased 40 acres of land and 125 more acres in 1841. It is interesting to note in 1840 he listed $115.00, in 1841, $210.00, and in 1842, $250.00 as " loaned at interest."
The 1840 and 1850 Census records William and his family still in Bowen Township of Madison Co., Ark. According to family information, about 1853-1854, William and Cynthia moved to Newton County Missiouri, then to Tx. where they executed a deed, notarized in Young Co., for land they owned in Newton Co., Missouri.
In the 1860 Census, William and Cynthia Cantwell are in Buchanan Co., (later Stephens) Tx. and daughter Arminda is with them. Living nearby are sons, Abner and Stephen.
With the limited data at hand, the following are presented as probable children of William and Cynthia. Also want to mention that for some reason some of the children changed their names to Cantrell. Don Cantwell (#151) said his grandfather, Alvin Jasper (#53) told him that there was some family trouble and thats why some changed their names. One genealogist says our name was Cantrell and was changed to Cantwell. Who knows? I do hope we can find proof one way or the other someday. So I don't want families getting upset because they are listed in a Cantwell book. The truth is they all came from Wm. & Cynthia, but as I already mentioned, some used the Cantrell and others used the Cantwell name.
