Thomas Cardwell Sr. was the son of William Cardwell and Mary Wiltshire of Kirkham, Lancashire, England (who later moved to Thornhill Parish, Yorkshire, England). Thomas immigrated to Virginia Colony in 1636 at age 21 on the ship "Tristram & Jane" and settled in King William County, Virginia. He became a tobacco planter.[1] Thomas first married Grace Carey Spencer (1615-c1646) from Shropshire, England in 1638 in King William. It is unknown if Thomas & Grace had any children. After Grace's death, Thomas married Mary Elizabeth Collyer (1615-c1698) from Wilshire, Shropshire, England on April 12,1660 in Middlesex County, Virginia. Thomas and Mary had at least six children, four of whom lived to adulthood.
Thomas' will was dated May 12,1687 & proven on July 6,1689. He died shortly after his will was written, and was buried in the Old Christchurch Parish Churchyard in Middlesex County, Virginia. Mary Elizabeth married again to John Williams on October 10,1696 in Middlesex County. "The will of Thomas Cardwell of Middlesex County, Virginia, dated 12 May1687 and recorded 6 July 1689, leaves his plantation to his wife Mary and his two minor daughters Ann and Nora Cardwell, mentioning sons-in-law Thomas and John Basket (Basset) and appointing his son-in-law Raleigh Masey as executor, and Thomas Senior and Job (or John) Richards as overseers of the will. Witness: Daniel Long and William Daniell Jr. Note:The daughters may have been recently married, as it was the custom to list their maiden names in wills."[2]
Thomas Cardwell was the first of the Cardwell line to immigrate to the New World.
He landed at Jamestown. He then migrated northward to settle on the south bank of the Mattaponi River in King William county. By 1666, he moved to the north side of the Mattaponi, purchasing 300 acres on Sunderland (later Burnhams) Creek in Lancaster Co.unty. Middlesex was formed from this area in 1673. It is not clear as to when the name Cordell, Cordwell became Cardwell. The Cardwells moved successively westward: all in Virginia - Middlesex Co. to Henrico Co. to Cumberland Co. to Prince Edward County.[3]
