Biography

Nicholas was the son of Nicholas Carew and Avice Tuitt. [1]

In 1301 he signed the famous letter of the parliament of Lincoln to the Pope, asserting the feudal dependence of Scotland on the English Crown, not as Baron Carew where he was a tenant of the Earl of Pembroke, but as Lord of Moulsford. In the same year he was summoned by Edward I to his army which fought Scotland. Before his death he granted his lands in Carlow, Ireland to his son John. His daughter Beatrice married David Barri. [2](P 14)

The Baron of Carew was held by the service of five knights fees of the Earl of Pembroke, and twelve fees were held by the barony by military service. [2] (P18)

He married 1st Amicia Peverell. They had issue:

  • Sir John de Carew d. 1324
  • Beatrice de Carew[3]

He married 2nd Avice Martin. They had issue:

  • Thomas de Carew

1300 He was summoned to Parliament as 'lord of Moulsford' and died seised of the manor. His son John had livery of his lands in that year, but John Wogan, justiciar of Ireland, evidently had the custody of Moulsford in 1316.

5th Feb 1307 Sir John Wogan, the Justiciary of Ireland, was ordered to ascertain what Knights’ Fees and advowsons of Churches the late Earl of Norfolk, who held of the King in capite , possessed in Ireland. On the 8th April, 1307, the Inquisition was held in Carlow, and the Jury found that the late Earl held a number of castles, manors, boroughs, lands, etc including The “Barony of Odron at Dunlek, held by Nicholas de Carrew”. [4]
