Biography

Doris was the youngest of 5 children of James Clarence Carey & Rose May (O'Gara) Carey.

Her father James died suddenly of a stomach ailment in Summit,NJ when Doris was 14.

She later nearly died of Pneumonia missing her senior year in High School due to a severe allergic reaction to penicillin. She later married her old High School sweetheart and WWII vet (paratrooper) Earl Pearson in NJ in est.1946. They had two children, Wayne & Joyce. Doris later divorced Earl due to his violent temper and frequent beatings. Doris was awarded full custody of the children in 1954.

Later that year she met Herbert Phillips who also was recently divorced and with 3 sons, William, Kevin & Russel. They married as soon as both their respective divorces were final in 1956. During this time the newly formed family of 7 were living in Summit, NJ where herb had a small electrical appliance store. Doris's ex husband Earl was remarrying and requested that their two children (Wayne & Joyce) attend the out of state event.

Doris agreed to the request never to see her children again due to Earl's ability to hide behind his military career & court system.

Doris being of meager means was able to scrape enough together to hire a civil attorney who fought the military courts in vain.

Doris was reunited with her missing children over 30 years later which helped give her solace. Doris and Herb had their first child Larry Alan Phillips on 11/15/1955 and a second child Bonnie Leigh Phillips on 04/17/1957. In 1958 the remaining family moved to St. Petersburg, FL. where Herb could fully exercise his flamboyant and charming personality as a used car salesman while Doris earned house money as a janitor at their local Presbyterian church.

Doris divorced Herb in 1961 (finalized in 1962) on the grounds of polygamy when he had also married Shirley Jeanne (Knowles)Truesdale while leading a double life at home with Doris.

Doris packed up both her children, Larry and Bonnie, and managed enough to get bus tickets to her mothers in Summit, NJ. Larry at 4 yrs. of age had boils on his bottom and couldn't sit down during the entire 4 day trip.

Doris set up temporary residence in her older brothers home basement (John Carey) while Johns family resided upstairs in the main house. Doris met an old High School friend who was a welder and started a relationship. In the ensuing 18 months, Doris and her 2 children (Larry 4 & Bonnie 2 1/2)traveled and lived in every state east of the Mississippi river & Texas from one water tower welding project to the next.

The relationship was strained due to his propensity to drunkenness and fits of rage and as a result ended while in NJ. Doris with her elder sister Dorothy and 2 kids drove to St. Petersburg, FL. and was later joined by their now retired janitor mother who helped raise Doris's two children.

Doris's sister Dorothy suffered from alcoholism and soon after their arrival in FL. fell off the wagon and was asked to leave. Doris stayed in FL. working at various clerical positions to support her family and never remarried. In 1969 at the suggestion of a friend she relocated to Lakewood, CA. where with help from here mother finished raising her children and earned 4 doctorates in metaphysical science.

She had the ability to "read" people utilizing a method called Sycometry which she gladly assisted others with for no financial benefit to herself.

Doris was retired by her son Larry in 1992. She lived with her son and his family in Friday Harbor, WA. and in 1997 relocated to Ticonderoga, NY with them until 2004.

At that time her daughter Bonnie persuaded her to relocate to Sandy, OR. where she lived at a assisted living facility until her death in 2011.
