In 1707, William Carlisle was ordained a Ruling Elder in the Armagh Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.[1] He was still an elder in 1711 and attended a General Synod in Belfast on June 21st.[2] It should be noted that both the town and parish of Newry lie partly in County Armagh. Since William was ordained an elder in the Armagh Presbytery, and not the Down Presbytery, it is likely that he had a home somewhere in County Armagh at the time of his ordination. It is certain, however, that at some point he inherited his father's estate of Ashgrove, which just inside County Down.
William has been thought to have died sometime before May 11, 1724, when one Ann Carlisle was represented by an uncle in her marriage to one James Widney in County Monaghan.[3] However, there is no evidence that the two Ann Carlisles are one and the same.
