Because of the difficulty in reading old records, Morgan is often referred to as Monroe & Micajah. Morgan was the only member of this family who achieved any prominence in the papers, but the rest of the family did not want to talk about him. He was considered the "family scamp", a hard worker when he wanted to be but "was more interested in drinking, smoking, card playing, attending burlesque shows, chasing girls and fishing on Sunday." He appeared in the papers in 1890 for buying a bottle of whiskey on Sunday from a man who had no license to sell. When the case came to court, Morgan skipped town and hid out in Indianapolis until the dust cleared. Soon after, he was in the papers again when he was found, passed out in a stupor on the walk to the local Church on Sunday morning. He was charged with public indecency and fined $13.75. According to the papers, "the rest of the family was fine upstanding, faithful church goers......."[1]
