He was born on 16 May 1969 in San Francisco, California, USA [1] and his parents were Lisa McNear (Lombardi, 1945-2011) and Richard "Dick" (Boynton) Carlson.
His parents divorced in 1976 and his father was granted custody of Tucker and his younger brother. When he was six, his mother left the family, wanting to pursue a "bohemian" lifestyle.
In 1979, his father married divorcée Patricia Caroline Swanson, an heiress to Swanson Enterprises. Tucker and his brother had their middle names altered by adding Swanson for thier stepmother. She is the daughter of Gilbert Carl Swanson and the niece of Senator J. William Fulbright.
When he was in first grade, his father moved the family to LaJolla, California, USA.
He was briefly enrolled at a boarding school in Switzerland, Collège du Léman, but says he was "kicked out".
He attained his secondary education at St.George's School, a boarding school in Middletown, Rhode Island, USA where he started dating the headmaster's daughter, Susan Andrews.
He then went to Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, USA where he graduated in 1991 with a B.A. in history.
