Her name is sometimes spelled Carleton and Carrolton by descendants. The Dowdy family bible, printed in Scotland, gives her date of infant baptism as (10?) April 1784. The bible does not state that she was born in Scotland. Some great-grandchildren believed she was, since the bible was printed in Scotland, but it was the Dowdy family bible and not the Carlton family bible. Bibles imported from Scotland were extremely popular in America. Yet other descendants have speculated that since she was later a Baptist, the baptism date was for adult baptism rather than infant baptism, another assumption which is unlikely given her age. If she were born in Scotland, she would have been baptized as a child and likely Presbyterian.
