Biography

Thomas and his wife Martha of Duplin Co. NC were said by some including the late Milton D. Wilson, of Bartow, Fl to have been born in Chester Co. PA on May 10, 1747; but this has not been able to be confirmed. Although there were some Carletons in Chester Co. from 1711 until the time of the Revolution or later there is not a definite connection between them and our branch of the family. A number of people who have worked up abbreviated family histories claim descent from the Carletons who settled at Rowley, Mass. with the Rev. Ezekiel Rogers Company in 1638. The descendants of Edward Carlton mentioned later have been pretty well accounted for up to the time of the Revolutionary War; after our ancestors were already established in NC and up to that time none of them had migrated southward. I much prefer to thank that our ancestors were early settlers in either Virginia or NC and there is some proof of this. Thomas Carleton died in Duplin Co. NC in 1795 leaving a will of which I have a copy on record in that county. He named the following children as heirs: Rachel, Anna, John, Lydia, Stephen and Thomas. Another dauther Elizabeth married the Rev. Peter Carlton son of John a brother of Thomas and died fairly young without issue. Thomas was a soldier in the Revolutionary War serving as a private in Duplin County NC and was paid for his services as allowed by the board of Auditors of Wilmington, District taken from New Hanover County NC (see D. A. No. 248700).

Colonial and Revolutionary Records of Carltons taken from Colonial Records of the State of North Carolina: Lt. Col. Carlton appointed to Command at Terrytown, Colonial Records NC vol. 12, pg. 531, John Carlton enlisted as a private in 10th Regiment of NC Revolutionary War from Jones Co. Dec. 7, 1781 time out Jan. 1, 1783. vol. 16, pg. 1037 Colonial Records, David Carlton, enlisted same rank, Regiment, War, Date and place, time out as John his younger brother and was a pensioner in 1835,Pension vol. 22, pg. 61, Joseph Carlton, Sec. to Minister of War, ordered ammunition delivered to troops in NC in March 1782. Vol. 16, pg. 561, Richard Carlton was probably the original Carlton of this family to immigrate to America, asked for a land grant in Choaw Co. NC in 1739, Vol. 4, pg. 344. He is listed as being in the Militia of Craven Co. NC in 1751, see Vol.22, pg.324,William Carlton (a senior) was in the services in the Revolutionary War, Vol. 8, pg. 797,Joseph Carlton way paymaster of the board of War Ordinance in 1778, Vol.15, pg. 745, John Carlton II with a Marriage Bond signed by W. M. Carlton,(a senior)Married to Lattice Norfield, marriages then in NC required a bond, see record date of Feb. 16, 1816, William Carlton to Elizabeth Weaver; Bondsman John Carlton II, July 8, 1819

The other story: The first Carlton, Edward, traced his descendant from Baldwin De Carleton, who lived at Carleton Hall in 1066, near Pensith, England. Baldwin and his descendants from the conquest of 1066 lived in Carleton Hall for about 600 years. Some years ago (many) Captain Percival A. Carlton published in England for private use only a book entitled Memorial of the Carltons, bringing the records of the family down to the "present" generation.

Rev. Hiram Carlton devoted many years to the study of the family history and died in 1893. His nephew James Hiram Carlton of Montpelier VT was also interested in the study as is William H. Carlton, South Groveland Mass.

Carlton House, Carlton Terrace and Carlton Club are derived from Henry Boyle, Secretary to Queen Ann. He was created Baron Carlton (Yorkshire) in 1714. He left his house to Fredrick Prince of Wales at his death in 1725 though he had no connection to the Carlton family. Records show Baldwin Carlton and descendants lived in Carlton Hall from 1066 for 600 years.

Carltons in America: The Carltons in the U.S. who are descendants of Edward from Baldwin De Carleton are: Edward Carlton born in Carlton Hall England about 1600 married in England and had a son John, he came with his wife Eleanor and son John to America with Rev. Ezekiel Rogers Company and settled in Rowley, Mass in 1639.

He had the following children: Edward, born Aug. 28, 1639, first white child born in Rowley, Mary, born April 2, 1642, Elizabeth, born Jan. 26, 1644. Edward and entire family returned to England in 1646 to live. About 1656 he sent his oldest son, John b. 1630 to America to look after property in Rowley and Bedford Mass. He became Lieutenant John Carlton around this time and married Hannah Jewett and settled in Bedford and Haverhill Mass and died Nov. 22, 1668.

Edward Carlton b. March 22,1664 married Elizabeth Kimbell and had the following children: Edward, Benjamine, and Nehemiah.

Edward Carlton b. Feb 20, 1690 had Richard, Edward, John and Peter.

Richard b. Jan. 9, 1712 married Abigail Hutchins of Haverhill Aug. 29, 1738 and settled in Tolland Conn. they had John, Richard, Samuel and others, John was the father of Thomas born 1747.

Thomas Carlton and his brother, John Carlton were Revolutionary Soldiers of Duplin Co. NC and are the progenitors of many of the Carltons of Georgia and Florida. He was (supposedly) born in Chester Co. Penn May 10, 1747 and died in Duplin Co. NC Oct. 3, 1795. He married Martha Thomas who was born in 1751 and died 1799 in Chester Co. Penn. They may have lived in Hanover County NC before the War, but lived in Duplin Co. NC during the Revolutionary War.

Research Noes

In the Henry ancestry it states that his name was William Thomas Carlton. I personally know the Henry family and know that they are our relatives. I also know that many of the names in this tree were carried through generations. Lydia was carried through on Carlton as were William and Thomas as first names.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thomas by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thomas:

Carlton-1230 and Carlton-407 appear to represent the same person because: Appear to be duplicates of the same man based on data in common, other duplicate profiles in this family also in train of being merged. Thanks.
One final comment - if we know that John is a brother of William "Thomas" Carlton and his son is Rev. Peter Carlton - Should we add a John Carlton and connect them? At present it seems this profile has the wrong parents and siblings. While Henry family has these parents in their family tree this is not documented how they determined this John Carleton with Hannah Platts was in fact his parents.

With a Will in possession it seems that this is confirmed that Rachel, Anna, John, Lydia, Stephen and Thomas are children. Elizabeth was not in will?

One problem I have that doesn't seem to make sense is Blake and Moses as siblings. I question if the parents are incorrect on this as no Blake or Moses is carried in children's names, while John is, which may be the name of William "Thomas" Carlton's brother.
