Research Notes

There sometimes is confusion as to Leander Pinkney's first daughter, Sarah Ann (Carlton) Spurgeon (1854-1942). Some early census' have Sarah Ann inferred as first daughter of second wife Margaret Ann (Evans) Carlton (1832-1926). However, Leander and Margaret did not marry until 4 April 1855 and Leander's and Mary Ann (Young) Carlton (abt.1834-abt.1854) first daughter, Sarah Ann, was born 20 Sept 1854. On Sarah Ann Carlton Spurgeon's death certificate, her mother's name is listed as Mary Ann Young (see profile Mary Ann (Young) Carlton (abt.1834-abt.1854)) slb 4 Jan 2023

It is possible that Mary Ann died in childbirth, or soon after, giving birth to their daughter Sarah Ann (Carlton) Spurgeon (1854-1942). She lived with her father and step-mother for the first few years of her life, then was sent to live with her mother's parents/her maternal grand parents: David Young (abt.1809-1871) & Lucrecia (Richardson) Young (abt.1811-1882). slb 4 Jan 2023
