Robert was born April 14, 1961 in Maryhill, Glasgow, Scotland to Elizabeth and Joseph Carlyle. He was brought up by his father after his mother left when he was only four years old. He left school at the age of 16, without any qualifications, and worked with his father as a painter and decorator. He did continue his education by attending night classes at Cardonald College in Glasgow.[1]
Robert became involved in drama at the Glasgow Arts Centre at the age of 21. He was inspired by reading Arthur Miller's The Crucible. He graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.[1]
In 1991, he and four friends founded a theatre company, Raindog, and guest starred in The Bill. The same year he starred in his first movie, Riff-Raff, directed by Ken Loach.[1]
In 1994, he played the role of Father Greg's gay lover in the film Priest. His first high-profile role came as murderer Albert "Ablie" Kinsella in an October 1994 episode of Cracker opposite Robbie Coltrane. Shortly after his appearance he landed the role of Highland policeman, Hamish Macbeth, in the BBC comedy-drama Hamish Macbeth. The series ran from 1995-1997.[1]
In 1996 and 1997, he appeared as the psychopathic Francis Begbie in Trainspotting and Gaz, the leader of a group of male amateur strippers, in The Full Monty.[1]
In 1999, he portrayed arch villain Renard in the James Bond film The World is Not Enough. He played the villain Durza in Eragon (2006).[1]
He has done several movies, TV roles, and voice overs. In October 2011, Robert was chosen to portray Mr. Gold/Rumpelstiltskin in the ABC TV series Once Upon a Time.[1]
Robert is married to make-up artist, Anastasia Shirley, with whom he shares three children: Ava (2002), Harvey (2004), and Pearce Joseph (2006). The family lives in Glasgow. He is also a patron of School For Life in Romania.[1]
Robert was awarded the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in 1999.[2]
In 2002, Robert was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Arts Degree from Napier University in Edinburgh. This was in recognition of his contribution to Scottish drama.[2]
