I was eight years old when my parents took my sister and I to visit relatives in their home state of Georgia. I recall driving up to Uncle Dewey's house and seeing a well constructed barn and a home that looked like a Hillbilly House. The outside was unpainted. We entered by the back porch where my Uncle was sitting on a chair smoking his pipe. There was a window that led into the kitchen with a hand pump for the well water. You had to pump the water on the porch and it would empty into a sink through the window. There was no bathroom inside the home. We had to stand in a large tub that had water heated on the wooden stove for bathing and had to use the outhouse near the pig pin. There was wall paper on a few of the parlor walls but you could look through knot holes and see outside. Where there wasn't wallpaper old wadded up newspapers were stuffed between the cracks to ward off the cold. To an eight year old who lived in a city in a modern day home, all of these things were very unusual to me. It was so Beverley Hillbilly style before Jed struck that bubbling crude, black gold, Texas tea. I had such fun playing out in the barn and jumping into the pile of hay from the loft above. Uncle Dewey raised chickens and had a building that was full of them. Fascinating stuff for a child. I do recall that his wife, Aunt Ina, was a very good cook. She had that delicious homemade cream corn that I just love and fried Okra, yummy. About the only southern style food there is, Black Eyed Peas are my least favorite. These images always roll through my mind when I think of Uncle Dewey and Aunt Ina Carney.
