NOTES

  • l'Association des families Caron d'Amerique Inc. (shows the two marriages for Jules Caron. (Elisabeth Duguay born January 14, 1957 in Irishtown (a Bay at Perce .. the Western point of the Bay), Quebec Elisabeth ?Duguay dies on March 27, 1865.

Jules marries Marie Parent November 11, 1866

The 1861 Census, Township of Perce, County of Gaspe shows the connection between Jules Caron and The Parent family. Charles Parent (46 years old) Jane Parent (40 years old) John Birmingham - seaman age 27, single. He is almost certainly the husband-to-be of Elisabeth (daughter of Jules and Elisabeth)

Two households in the Census before Charles Parent is listed in the household of Sara Birmingham, 60, widow and her family. Why John Birmingham was boarding with the Parent family is unknown.

This same census for 1861, Township of Perce, County of Gaspe, Page 49, shows the following information:

Caron (spelled Coron in the Census) Jules, farmer/fisherman, both Lower Canada, Catholic, age 30, married, living in frame house with Elisabeth, age 30 and Jules Jr. 1 year old.

On page 50 of the Census, in a Hickson household, the fourth family enumerated after Jules, was noted an Elizabeth Caron, age 3. Given that there is an Elizabeth, 12 In Jules' family in '71 it could be surmised that this Elizabeth is a daughter of Jules and Elisabeth. Was the mother ill perhaps and Elizabeth being temporarily cared for by the neighbours? Perhaps Jules the 1 yr. old was still at breast, therefore remained in the home ... one of the mysteries.

1871 Census, Township of Perce, County of Gaspe shows the following information: Caron, Jules, age 40, born Quebec, Catholic, French origin, fisherman, married to Mary *(Marie), age 28 Elisabeth, 12 Jules 10 Philomene, 7 Xavier 5 Michel, 2

The 1881 Census, Township of Perce, County of Gaspe, page 9 shows the following: Caron, Jules, age 50, born Quebec, Catholic, French origin, farmer, married. In his household are: Mary (Marie) 39, Quebec, Catholic, French, Married Jules 19, single Xavier, 15 Michel, 12, in School Joseph, 10, in School Charles, 5 Genevieve, 3 Madeleine, 1 Philomene, 17 (Elizabeth would probably have been married and living elsewhere)

1891 Census, St. Francois d'Assie - Gaspe Coast Caron, Jules, 60 with Mary (Marie) 49 Jules Jr. is not there Xavier Caron, 25 Michel Caron, 22 Joseph Caron, 20 Genevieve Caron (Jane) 14 Charles Caron, 16 Madeleine Caron, 11 Josephine Caron, 9 Peter Caron, 6

From the Census information it is also clear that the Jules Caron and Marie Parent left Perce and moved to St. Francois d'Assie on the Gaspe Coast. Why they moved at their later ages to the "lumbering" area of the Gaspe is yet another one of those mysteries, but it is likely tied into the decision for Michel and Joseph to leave Quebec and migrate to British Columbia together.
