Biography

William was born in 1863. William Carpenter ... He passed away in 1919. [1]

He is the son of Henry Carpenter and Mary Foote. [2]

William Edward CARPENTER 1862 – 1919 Born at Millers Forest NSW in 1862 Notes presented by his son Edward Eric Arndell CARPENTER.

Became a school teacher and was transferred to a small farming community called Tooloom, there he met Catherine McLean and they married.

Their first born was a daughter called Grace Ellen, then a son was born called Henry Raymond. Then another son called Alfred Lisle Shipton after which he was transferred to another school at Corakie 15 miles from Lismore.

He was stationed there for a few years when another son was born, he was called Earnest Leon and was again moved to another school at Aracia Creed about 6 miles from the Queensland border. Here another son Cyril William was born in 1897.

In 1903 he was transferred to Boggabilla NSW 5 miles from the Queensland border near Goondiwindi where he remained until his death in 1919. Another son was born at Boggabilla in March 1905 named Robert Noel Trevor then another son in July 1908 called Edward Eric Arndell. (The Arndell named was associated with Thomas Arndell who came to Australia with the first fleet, he was the assistant surgeon on the “Friendship” he became a prominent figure in the early days of the colony).

Henry the oldest son was left behind to work in a store at Acardia Creek. He stayed there for some time eventually coming to Boggabilla where obtained a position in another store. He eventually moved to Tamworth and then Casino. It was there that he had an appendix operation which almost proved fatal. From then on he suffered indifferent health. In 1940 he was living in Sydney and suffered a bout of Peritonitis and doctors at King George V hospital discovered a swab that had been left inside him from his earlier operation, some 32 years earlier.

The vocation of the sons were.

Lisle became a chemist, Leon was employed by the stock department, Cyril by Queensland Railways, Trevor became a Stock and Station agent, Eric entered retail employment, Henry a Stock and Station agent,

Grace married a dairy farmer (Neville Brown) and lived at Mallanganee until her death.
