Continental Army - Order of Battle - July 22, 1775

Main Army
General George Washington
Left Wing
2d (Lee's) Division (Major General Charles Lee)
5th (Sullivan's) Brigade (Brigadier General John Sullivan).
Doolittle's Regiment, or 18th Massachusetts Regiment. Colonel Ephraim Doolittle. (Disbanded December 31, 1775).[3]

The 18th Massachusetts Regiment was commanded by Colonel Ephraim Doolittle, who left the service in October 1775. Command of the regiment passed to its next senior officer, Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin Holden, of Princeton. It served in the Siege of Boston until its disbandment at the end of 1775.[4][5][6][7]

NOTE: In January 1776 many units were consolidated (disbanded, reformed) and re-designated. The 18th Massachusetts (along with the Greaton’s Regiment, formerly Heath’s Regiment – in 1777 known as the 3rd Mass) and others became the 24th Continental Regiment (Massachusetts Line) under Col. John Greaton. Samuel Carpenter was probably assigned to this unit until after the Siege of Boston was lifted on 17 March 1776.[8] We find him again on the roll of Capt. Capron's company, Col. Samuel Ashley's Regiment of Militia in the State of New Hampshire. He enlisted June 29, 1778 and served five days (discharged 3 July).
