James Carpenter was born to John Carpenter and Catharine Anna Westfall on October 13, 1820 and baptized on January 22, 1821 in Machackemeck, Deerpark, Orange, New York.[1] He married Elizabeth House on January 15, 1848, in New Jersey.[2] James died on November 23, 1881, in Fayette County, Iowa.[3][4] He is mentioned on a memorial in Taylorsville Cemetery, Arlington, Fayette County, Iowa.[5]

In the 1860 census, James, age 39, farmer, was enumerated in Colony Township, Delaware, Iowa.[7]
In the 1870 census, James, age 50, farmer, was enumerated in Scott, Fayette, Iowa.[8]
In the 1880 census, James, age 59, farmer, was enumerated in Scott, Fayette, Iowa.[9]
