Biography

Joshua was born about 1740. He is the son of Samuel Carpenter II and Patience _____.

From form (application) submitted by Helen Roberta Herpel Morriss on March 30, 1990 and accepted into the DAR., she states "Joshua Carpenter served as a private in Col. Hathorn's Regt., of Militia of Orange Co., NY under Captain Minthorn. This regiment was called out on alarm of Minnisink in July, 1777--"A detachment of same regiment, the companies of Capts. Sayers, Sherpard, and Minthron, was call out at Minnisink in June, 1779." "Hawthorns Regt. Orange Co., Militia was called out under command of Lieut. Col. Winer on an alarm at Minnisink in May 1781." Reference number for Military Record were "See Nat. #70849, 192073, 203804." [1]

Served in Revolution as a pvt. in Col. Hathorn`s Regt., of Militia if Orange Co. , N.Y. under Capt. Minthorn. This regt. was called out on alarm of Minisink in July, 1777--"A detachment of same regt. , the companies of Capts. Sayers, Shepherd, and Minthorn, was called out at Minisink in June, 1779" Hathorns Regt. Orange Co., Militia was called out under command of Lieut. I. Samuel was b. about 1734; moved to Goshen, NY. Called Deacon Samuel Carpenter; m Betsey Allison and lived on a farm about a mile from Goshen, NY. He volunteered at the battle of Minisink and was appointed Captain to guard the women and children at the Goshen Court House; hence was not in that disastrous battle. He died at Florida, NY when on a visit to his son Daniel, about 1800. (153}

III. Abraham.
IV. John was b. about 1740 and in 1775 was residing in District No. 10. A blacksmith.
V. Joshua was b. about 1740; m. 1st, Hannah Ludham; he bought land in Jamaica in 1756 (aged 16, born earlier?); m. 2nd, Sarah Burt, about 1775.; he removed from Jamaica and settled near Elmira, N. Y. (154)
VI. Richard was b. about 1745, probably at Jamaica. He owned 100 acres af land in District No. 10, Goshen, and this is about ywo miles from the village of Goshen. (155)

Carpenter, Joshua, grandfather of Benjamin C., came to Newtown (now Elmira) in [1788], and located permanently the following year upon the homestead on which his grandson still owns. At this date Elmira had but one house. His son Daniel, born near Newburgh, Orange County, NY in 1776, came here in 1788 with his parents and about 1798 married Rebecca Dunn, who was born in New Jersey. They had ten children viz.: Sarah, James D., Burt, John, Thomas, Elizabeth, Catherine, Rebecca, William, and Benjamin C. The latter, born March 16, 1825, has always been a farmer and a bachelor, the town line runs through his house.
