Notes
According to "History and Genealogy of The Carpenter Family..." cited above, on page 128 is the following:
Abraham Carpenter, son of John, was born, probably at Musketa Cove, L.I., on December 27, 1738. His wife was Lydia (1) daughter of Peter Totten, "Inn Holder", of North Castle. They were married September 20, 1759. He, too, was an inn-keeper, as well as having a farm at North Castle. His will is dated 1780 and was proved September 10, 1784, at which time his daughters Freelove and Elizabeth were not 14.
The page goes on to note that Freelove was born Oct 12, 1767, died 1835. On page 37 the progenitor of the Carpenter family on Long Island is said to be Joseph Carpenter, and his brother Ephraim, who arrived before 1676 and was one of the proprietors of land purchased directly from the natives. As more settlers arrived from Rhode Island and Massachusetts, the original settlers sought a legal "patent" from the British Crown in 1677 for Musketa Cove (now "Glen Cove") and Oyster Bay. Joseph died about 1683 "the sickly season" but his burial place is unknown. It is very likely to be within the "place of ye graves" which was originally part of Joseph Carpenter's "Home Lott".
No record of Joseph Carpenter's children has been found to date. Gathered from local records, he is supposed to have nine children:
Joseph b. at Pawtuxet, RI 1660. He had two sons, Joseph b. 16 Oct 1685, and Thomas b. 15 Aug 1687. Freelove is the daughter of Thomas, according to many sources. However she is specifically mentioned on page 128, as noted above, and is said to be the daughter of Abraham.
A daughter b. 1662 who married William Thornicraft
Tamsen, born 1664, married John Williams
William born 1666
Nathaniel born 1668, said to be the first white child born at Musceta Cove.
Hannah, born 1672-3, married Jacob Hicks in 1690
Ann born 1676 (to Joseph's 2nd wife), married Joseph Weeks.
Benjamin born 1680 (to Joseph's 2nd wife)
John born 1683 (to Joseph's 2nd wife)
