Biography

She passed away in 1824. Margaret, the daughter of Nicholas Carper and Anna Margaretha Marsteller, was born in about 1751, possibly on December 27th, however, no record has been found to confirm this birthdate. Margaret married Benjamin Peck during 1769 in Sinking Creek, Virginia which is now called Craig County, Virginia.[1]

She is sometimes identified as Mary Margaret, but records that have been found for her today identify her only as "Margaret".

At the time of her birth Margaret's family was living in the Muddy (Modern) Creek watershed, in Cocalico township in Lancaster County, PA. Her father owned land in that area by 1753 (Mayhill, 1973). In 1758 his son was in possession of that parcel, having apparently inherited the property as eldest son. No death record has been found for Nicholas, but he is presumed to have died between 1753 and 1758.

We have no further information about Margaret's mother, Margaretha Marsteller. She may have died, or perhaps remarried after her husband's death. Margaret Carper may have been living with her mother, or with one of her older siblings. We have no information to confirm that one way or another.

Sometime after Nicholas' death Margaret Carper's extended family moved south to settle near the Potomac River. At least one of her brothers, Phillip, settled on Opequon Creek near Winchester in Frederick County, Virginia. They lived within a few miles of where Margarets future husband, Benjamin Peck, would be born about 1744. Other family members may have settled further north, either near New Mecklenburg (now Shepherdstown) in what was then Frederick County, Virginia (now Jefferson County, West Virginia), or immediately across the Potomac near Sharpsburg, in what was then Frederick County Maryland, now Washington County, Maryland.

Benjamin Peck, the eldest son of Jacob Beck and Lydia Borden, was born in Frederick County, Virginia near the town of Winchester about 1744. Jacob and Lydia moved north within a few years of their marriage and would settled near Sharpsburg as attested to in a letter from one of Jacob's cousins in Ebingen, in what is now Baden-Wuertemberg, Germany, written in 1769. The "Ebingen Letter" is no longer extant, but was described in Valentine.

Benjamin and Margaret are believed to have married 1769, based on the 1770 date of birth of their eldest son, Jacob. That marriage probably occurred in either the Sharpsburg area or in New Mecklenburg. Valentine states that the marriage occurred near Sharpsburg where they lived until 1772 when they removed to New Mecklenburg where they purchased a town lot from Thomas Shepherd. The town would later be renamed for Shepherd, a Revolutionary War patriot.

Margaret and Benjamin did not remain long in New Mecklenburg. By 1777 they, and other family members, had moved south to Botetourt County, Virginia. Their New Mecklenburg town lot was sold in 1778. Benjamin's father, Jacob Peck would settle in the town of Fincastle. Margaret's brother Jacob Carper would settle there as well. Benjamin and Margaret would eventually settle in Sinking Creek Valley in the area that would eventually become Giles County. They would live out their lives in this area. Benjamin wrote his will on the 27 of December 1820. Court records indicate that it was in probate by May of 1827, suggesting a date of death between 1820 and 1827. Margaret is mentioned in his will telling us only that she died after 27 December 1820.

Roberts tells us that Benjamin's "grave is marked by a huge sugar maple tree ten feet in circumference. His gravestone still bears the name BENJAMIN which is the only word legible on the stone."[2] Margaret's memorial on FindAGrave states that "she and Benjamin buried Miller Cemetery, his stone only marked with first name Benjamin.[1]

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Margaret by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Margaret:

Margaret Carpers DOB, whether you use 28 Dec 1750 or 27 Dec 1751, is an exact date, suggesting that there is in fact an underlying original source for one or the other dates.

Margaret's baptismal record should appear in the records of either the Muddy (Modern) Creek Lutheran Congregation or the German Reformed Congregation. Both Congregations used the same building. Wright, 1994 gives the records of both Congregations, but does not include a baptismal record for Mary or Margaret in either Congregation. Another possible source is "Extracts of those published by the Penn German Society". One of their volumes I'm told covers these Congregations. It should have been picked up in Wright 1994, but perhaps not. I've not seen this work as yet, but it needs to be checked.

Currently, 30 Oct 2018, Ancestry includes 7 Public Member Trees for Mary Margaret Carper=Benjamin Peck (including variations on the given name of Margaret and her husband Benjamin. Most use the 27 Dec. 1751 DOB, None use the 28 Dec 1750 DOB. I have found original source documentation for neither date, and use the 1751 date only because it seems to be preferred by most genealogists. We don't decide things in genealogy by "populartity vote", but sometimes that's all we have to decide between two choices.
