It is believed that Marie Carr was born in New York. Her father worked at sea and her mother died when Marie and her sister (unknown) were very young. As a result, Marie's father placed the two girls in an orphanage where they lived out their childhood. They earned their keep by cleaning houses. I'm not sure if this was before or after (or both) they were in the orphanage. This information replaces the previous belief that Marie Carr was an indentured servant working her way over from Ireland. The information comes from an email conversation with GraceAnn Dickson, Marie's grandaughter 11/09/13.
