Biography

"John Wesley Carroll was born July 30, 1815 in Franklin County, Georgia. He was the son of John W Carroll, a Methodist minister. His mother was Elizabeth Redwine, the daughter of Jacob Redwine Sr, also a Methodist minister. "John Wesley married Hulda Hearn, daughter of Stephen Hearn and Jane Ballard, about 1838. They lived and farmed in Coweta County, Georgia, living in a log house that was near the Widow Varner's Ferry on the Chattahoochee River. To John Wesley and Hulda five children were born, the oldest dying in infancy. There were three son. John Franklin married his first cousin Mary C Carroll. Stephen Blynn married Susan Bullard, and James Craton married Mary Jane Covington Tate. A daughter, Nancy Jane (Sis), married George Lantrip. In 1855 John Wesley and Hulda moved to Jackson Parish, Louisiana, about eight miles from Chatham. He rented a farm near Hood's Mill, working hard planting a big cotton crop. The worms ate the cotton, and typhoid fever claimed the life of his wife Hulda, leaving him with the four small children. After his return to Georgia he married Lucinda Bond Jordan on May 10, 1857 in Campbell County. "Before the start of the Civil War, John Wesley and Lucinda became the parents of two daughters, Francis Carolyn, who married Henry Sutton and Emily Katherine, who married Thomas S (Bob) Head. On June 23, 1870 Lucinda died and is buried in the Brooklyn Cemetery. John Wesley and the younger children kept the home together, until some years later when he married again, a widow, Charity Elizabeth Browder Thompson. Charity and John Wesley were to become the parents of one son, Lewis Wesley, who was married to Sue Hazel Moore. John Wesley died when Lewis had just turned twelve years old. Charity of 'Little Granny' then moved to Texas. She is buried in the Hopwell Cemetery in Upshur County. "Lewis Carroll and Sue Moore Carroll have four children: Durand Wesley, Hazel, James (Buddie) and Beth. They have one grand daughter, Judy Carroll Marshall."
