John Erastus Carroll was born 1/26/1850 near Ellisville, Miss. It was: a small college town about 80 miles from Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He moved to Louisiana and homesteaded about a quarter mile south of the Mitchell's near Big Spring Creek. He married Nancy Mitchell in 1869. In 1895 John Carroll moved his family to Loyd's Bridge community, on Bayou Boeuf.
About 10 years before his death, he got overheated while building a fence and an abscess started in his head. The doctor told him that when the abscess burst he would die immediately, and he did. Buried in Paul's Cemetery in Forest Hill, Louisiana.
John Erastus Carroll was superintendent of a Sunday School which met in a little one-room building. He was a master Mason and his daughter; said that no matter how bad the weather was on meeting night, he saddled his horse and went to Cheneyville to the lodge meeting. There is a large masonic tombstone on his grave. He had a beard that was down to his chest. He said the reason he had the beard was that he had a tooth in his lower jaw that abscessed, burst through the jaw and drained, and he grew the beard to hide the hole in his jaw. The Carroll family was Methodist.
