Biography

Michael was born in Lisheenboy, Tipperary, Ireland in 1684 and was the 3rd son of Anthony Carroll of Lisheenboy and Elizabeth Carroll.

Michael's father fought at the Battle of Boyne, the last stand of the Irish Catholics against William of Orange and Mary II. He surrendered and survived but was tried for treason. He was exonerated and on applying for restoration of his lands, family property at Lisheenboy was returned to him. He became known as Anthony Carroll of Lisheenboy.

Michael remained at Lisheenboy, farming with his father, while 5 of his 6 siblings migrated to the colony of Maryland, helped by their uncle Charles Carroll The Settler. Michael's brother Daniel became a lawyer and went to London, where he entered Gray's Inn in 1704, also with assistance from their uncle Charles. Daniel returned to farm at Lisheenboy later the same year, when Catholics were prohibited from practicing law.

Michael married Joanna Browne and they had 5 sons.

  1. Dominick migrated to Maryland, where he died in 1736.
  2. Daniel married Mary Browne and 3 children.
  3. James migrated to Maryland and died unmarried.
  4. Dominick migrated to Chesapeake and married Mary Sewall. They had 5 daughters.
  5. Henry Carroll is believed to have been the 5th son, but this is uncertain. He migrated to Maryland and married Araminta Thompson. He died in 1775.

The family were not in a dire situation - being head tenants meant they received payments and produce from under tenants. They owned some horses and were literate. However the property could not adequately support the growing family and Michael's father Anthony Carroll of Lisheenboy left for Dublin in 1718 to seek work as a stone cutter. There was a building boom and plenty of work. While there, he obtained a 3 lives lease on 100 acres for Michael's brother Daniel, at Killecregane, Tipperary, leaving Michael to farm Lisheenboy. He became known as Michael Carroll of Lisheenboy.

Michael remained living in Lower Ormond, County Tipperary and died in 1762.

His mother's maiden name was Carroll and so was her married name. She was the sister of James Carroll of Ballycrenode and married Anthony Carroll of Lisheenboy, according to Princes of Ireland, Planters of Maryland, a Carroll Saga, 1500 - 1872 by Ronald Hoffman.
